yucko...brains, intestines...

YUCKO...
as Sam would say!
What's Halloween without the yucko stuff?
Halloween morning the boys woke up to some delicious choices for breakfast...toenails, teeth, intestines or brains!  They loved guessing what was in each container.  Sam was not afraid to pull out some brains and eat them...he waked up very hungry.

To Make...Mystery Boxes
recycled oatmeal containers
anything slimy in your pantry
i used: noodles, grapes, popcorn and pumpkin seeds
google it and you'll find tons of ideas

vinegar&baking soda...rockets

Baking Soda and Vinegar Rockets

...it happens so quickly I couldn't get a picture

What you need:
Film Canister...we used a sprinkle jar with a push on top
Baking Soda
Vinegar

...Put the baking soda in the lid, pour vinegar into the canister, quickly put the lid on, sit on ground and watch it explode!
...You will have to experiment with how much baking soda and vinegar you need.  This is part of the fun!

Afterwards we had freeplay...with the vinegar and baking soda!  I let the kiddos just have at it...they had a blast.

vinegar&baking soda...blowing up balloons

Blowing up Ballons
What You Need:
vinegar
baking soda
water
ballons
a funnel(we improvised)
a bottle(we used test tubes)

Ok.  First you need to get the baking soda into the balloon...just a spoonful or so.  This is where a funnel would be nice. We do not have one soo...

We spooned the baking soda into the funnel neck bottles.

Then dumped it into the balloon.

Next pour vinegar into the bottle or test tube...about half way.  Add water to make the bottle about 3/4 full.

Quickly put the balloon onto the bottle...shake...and watch it blow up.

WARNING...Your kids will LOVE this!  You will have to repeat the activity several times.

ADVICE...Put a baking pan under the activity for each child...it will catch the spills!

A little deflated but you get the idea:)

Playing with ICE

When I used to teach, I always did an ICE sensory bin as part of our "water unit".  This afternoon, we had been playing outside for a little while. The boys needed a new "game"...fighting and whining had begun and we still had an hour to kill until dinner time!

ICE SENSORY BIN
Dump your magazine bucket
Fill up with ice
Find fun things around your house:
scoops, chopsticks, blocks and spoons(catapults), tongs

Do you see the ice being catapulted?  Look hard!

Some was eaten!

We did a little writing...Sam has learned to recognize his name and that it starts with "S"!

A lot of TIC-TAC-TOE!

Tanner, of course, had some experiment going on.  He loaded up the ice and took it to different parts of the yard to see where it would melt the quickest.

The catapults were the biggest hit!!

~~~~~ocean in a bottle~~~~~
OCEAN IN A BOTTLE
 clear plastic bottle - a big soft drinks bottle is best
Some water
a few drops of blue food coloring
cooking oil
Directions
Fill one third of the bottle with water. Add a few drops of blue food coloring and shake the bottle until the water turns blue. Fill the rest of the bottle with the oil.   Tilt the bottle from side to side. Since the water and oil don not mix the blue water will look like an ocean!
***For Tanner we talked about density.  Very simple...some liquids mix but others do not because oil is less dense so it sits on top of the water.  Shake it up and it will separate again.  I briefly talked about molecules...he wanted to see one...hum!
!!!milk fireworks!!!
Milk Fireworks
milk
food coloring
q-tips or toothpicks
dishwash soap
plate or bowl
Pour the milk into your dish.  Squeeze food coloring into the milk...several colors.  Dip the q-tip into soap.  Dip q-tip into the food coloring drops.  The The food coloring mixes with the water in the milk.
"The soap is attracted to both the fat and the water in the milk. When you add it to the milk, it immediately begins to grab those parts, which results in a lot of mixing and movement, which, thanks to the food coloring, you can see. The soap also breaks the water's surface tension, allowing all kinds of movement to occur." from Science Matters Blog
-We have 3-4 different milks in our house typically.  I drink almond, Tanner lactose free, Sam 2% and Chris likes Whole...yuck!
We tried our experiment with the milks: almond, 2% and lactose free.
The boys made some abstract art by dipping paper onto the milk plates.  I wonder how it will smell when it dries???
I am little strawberry...red and sweet!
Love, love these dirty little hands:)
Sung to: "I'm A Little Teapot"
I am a strawberry,
Red and Sweet.
See all my seeds
And my cap so neat.
When I grow ripe
And ready to eat,
Pop off my cap--
A tasty Treat!
Messy Eggs...Round Two
After EASTER, I bought some super-cheap dye kits.  I was planning on saving these for next year but Tanner begged to dye eggs again...beautiful day...WHY NOT!!  I have to admit I secretly love making messes...NOT cleaning them up though! I am thinking if I play my cards right...I can teach the boys to do all of the cleaning after the messes...GOOD PLAN right!
GRASS...the boys each made at school!  They have been watering and cutting it...it's hilarious:)
OOBLECK...Happy B-Day Dr. Suess
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SUESS
The boys say...today in honor of your birthday we will make a giant mess in Mom's house just like the cat in the hat...can we borrow the machine that cleans please!!!
Mom says...thank you for making funny stories that boys enjoy...some of the first books(besides BOB) Tanner read pages from independenlty were written by you!
THE CAT IN THE HAT
Sam is very into scissors...he did not cut his of course but I let him make snips on some paper while Tanner cut the strips.  He is also into glue...I frequently hear "I unna cut...i unna gwoo."  I also find him with scissors from places no 22 month old should be able to get in his 5-10 unsupervised seconds!!!
Tanner has been into his journal lately...thank heavens we made the journal in the fall.  He read parts of HOP ON POP by Dr. Suess to me.
He picked a page to copy the words into his journal and drew a picture to go along with it.  We try to do this once a week...Tanner loves art but he loves to create.  Drawing is not his favorite.  I hope this journal will help encourage him to draw about things he loves to do.  I am thinking about art classes again but I just don't know if I we can handle one more thing!
BARTHOLOMEW and the OOBLECK
by Dr. Suess
OOBLECK
1 box of cornstarch
water...it's hard to say exactly how much
you should be able to move it like a liquid but a thick liquid
***oobleck is liquid in the bowl, hard like a rock to pick up and then once in your hand it melts***
SO FUN
...both of my kids love making this...today we dyed it green in honor of Dr. Suess and the kings oobleck
I have to admit that I have never read this story.  On our trip to the library last week I reminded Tanner that is was Dr. Suess' birthday soon.  We have been working on finding books during our weekly trip to the library. We look for the first letter of the authors last name...he can find the aisle about half the time pretty impressive since I see adults still asking. He now knows where to find different types of books: chapter books, fiction, non-fiction, easy-readers and the section with sports, science, comics etc.
Caught RED Handed
Hypothesis: Mixing toothpaste, soap and toilet paper in a confiscated Sprite bottle would make clean water
Conclusion: Clearly not clean water
Additional Comments: two parents who are trying so hard not to laugh...oh and a clogged sink:)
I just caught Tanner doing a "SCIENCE EXPERIMENT" in the bathroom when he should have been sleeping!!!
My time is wrong...it is not 6:00 it is almost 9:00:(
