lost our marbles

I might should have called this post...
"Buns in the Air"!

My house was in desperate need of a "deep clean".  It is VERY rare that I have the time to scrub from top to bottom but after having a sick dog and spending the last month potty training...it was time!  BTW...Sam is officially potty trained...2 weeks no accidents...fingers crossed! Whoop-whoop...bye-bye diapers!!!!  He likes to wear his "bossers" over his undies!

These marbles were my grandfather's...the boys love to play with them.  My sisters and I played marbles all the time when we visited my mom's parents.  I built this "marble fence"them to shoot the marbles inside of...needless to say it only work for a little bit.

I managed to get quite a bit done...I had to referre a few times but all in all it was successful.  I managed to sweep, mop, dust and scrub a few baseboards.  The boys came in several times to offer their assistance...Tanner unloaded the dishwasher and Sam helped dust.  We had a really great day...isn't it funny that some of the best days are spent at home cleaning with my little helpers.

Backyard Obstacle Course

My kiddos were up bright and early at 5:45 this morning so by 7:00 they were bored! This is a typical day at my house so before they ate breakfast #2...we built an obstacle course.

Through the tunnel
over the table
hop on the baseball bases
balance on the jump rope
hit the balloon with the paddle into the dumptruck
push the dumptruck to the chalk target
jump on the trampoline
shoot the ball and score

OK...so let me be honest...they only did MY obstacle course 2 times BUT
I encouraged Tanner to build his own and that was when the entertainment started.

Maw's Banana Bread

My grandmother was one of my best friends.  She was one of  the only people I ever let myself cry in front of...not the cry you can't help but the kind where you just sit down and let loose.  I would lean on her shoulder while she patted me and just cry.  She also sang to me...hymns...I can still hear them in my head and cry every time I hear them at church. Chris has started to learn the ones that make me cry and he just holds my hand.  She's the one who taught me life is not about your worldly treasures but the treasure that awaits for us in heaven.  She never had very much but was one of the most joyful, content people I knew.  My grandparents were such a big part of my life growing up so it's really important for my boys to spend lots of time with their grandparents!  They teach them so many things we can't. We are so fortunate to have both of our families here and the boys love spending time with them.

Ok so now that I'm crying while blogging...not intended...let's talk
BANANA BREAD.
Sometimes, my sisters and I would spend all weekend at my grandparents...literally Friday afternoon to Sunday night (Dad would meet us at church).  During our weekends we spent lots of time baking.  First, I must mention she would let us bake anything...not a recipe just whatever our little minds thought would be good mixed together(think flour, jelly, salt...sifted, mix and baked).  Needless to say we made some nasty food but Maw and Paw always sat down at the table and let us serve them our "dish"...which they ALWAYS tried!

Banana Bread was my favorite real recipe to cook with her or just to eat when she made it!

HAWAIIAN BANANA NUT BREAD RECIPE
3 cups all purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 8oz can crushed pineapples, drained
1 cup chopped nuts...we like pecans
3 eggs beaten
11/2 cup veggie oil
2 cup mashed bananas...starting to brown
2 teaspoon vanilla

Combine dry ingredients. Stir in nuts. Set aside.  Combine remaining ingredients.  Add dry ingredients stirring just until batter is moistened.  Spoon in 2 greased and floured 9x5x3 inch pans.  Bake 350 for 1 hour or until done.  Cool before removing from pan.  Yields 2 loaves.  Will freeze well. by MAW

***Over the years I have tweaked her recipe by trading the pineapples for other ingredients that I have on hand...zucchini, chocolate chips, pumpkin, apples.  The picture is chocolate chip, pecan, banana bread. We love the pineapple too!  I like to bake 4 loaves at a time...1 to eat, 1 to give away and 2 to freeze.
We gave this one to Sam's teachers!

The best part...before I got married I asked my grandmother to write down her recipes for me.  She wrote them all down on recipe cards and gave them to me for a wedding gift.  I love the gift now more than then...having her hand-written recipes means so much to me.  I have 2 framed in my kitchen.  I love having her memory so close when I cook!

~~~~~ocean in a bottle~~~~~
OCEAN IN A BOTTLE
 clear plastic bottle - a big soft drinks bottle is best
Some water
a few drops of blue food coloring
cooking oil
Directions
Fill one third of the bottle with water. Add a few drops of blue food coloring and shake the bottle until the water turns blue. Fill the rest of the bottle with the oil.   Tilt the bottle from side to side. Since the water and oil don not mix the blue water will look like an ocean!
***For Tanner we talked about density.  Very simple...some liquids mix but others do not because oil is less dense so it sits on top of the water.  Shake it up and it will separate again.  I briefly talked about molecules...he wanted to see one...hum!
take the mess OUTSIDE
Our easel lives outside in the summer.  My kids LOVE to paint...i don't mind a mess but
SAM IS A REBEL! He'll paint on anything!
Tanner learned the concept..."paint goes on paper" very quickly...he's a rule follower.
Sam is my clown...he loves to make people laugh or make someone mad so he can get a good laugh.
!!!milk fireworks!!!
Milk Fireworks
milk
food coloring
q-tips or toothpicks
dishwash soap
plate or bowl
Pour the milk into your dish.  Squeeze food coloring into the milk...several colors.  Dip the q-tip into soap.  Dip q-tip into the food coloring drops.  The The food coloring mixes with the water in the milk.
"The soap is attracted to both the fat and the water in the milk. When you add it to the milk, it immediately begins to grab those parts, which results in a lot of mixing and movement, which, thanks to the food coloring, you can see. The soap also breaks the water's surface tension, allowing all kinds of movement to occur." from Science Matters Blog
-We have 3-4 different milks in our house typically.  I drink almond, Tanner lactose free, Sam 2% and Chris likes Whole...yuck!
We tried our experiment with the milks: almond, 2% and lactose free.
The boys made some abstract art by dipping paper onto the milk plates.  I wonder how it will smell when it dries???
Happy Father's Day
We celebrated Father's Day the weekend before Father's Day!  Chris went on a deep sea fishing trip with friends. I wasn't sure if he be home or just be exhausted when he got home!  We had a mini celebration when he got home...lucky daddy 2 celebrations!  I had the boys answer questions on this
"All About My Dad"
sheet, then they drew a picture.  It was really sweet the boys were both so proud of their work...love it!
**WE TOOK THE BOYS TO SEE MR. PENGUINS POPPER'S AT THE MOVIE THEATRE  TONIGHT.  I can't believe we are at a stage where we can take both boys to see a movie!  It was so much fun...of course I'd be lying if I didn't say we feed Sam the WHOLE time...popcorn and lolipops...it did the trick!!!
Jones Orchard
I can't believe it was in the 80's this morning. We were soooo excited to be outside without sweating our buns off!  We talked about what to do for a few minutes but then Tanner suggested we go to the "farm" to pick fruit.  So we loaded up and headed to Millington to go to Jones Orchard.
Tanner was totally in his element as always...dirt, outside, hard work...heaven!  Sam loved picking too...I think he ate a few blackberries along the way.  Sam was definetly tired by the end of our picking.  We got to pick blackberries, plums and peaches.  Picking blackberries was our favorite!  Sam quickly learned to pick the black ones not the red ones...Tanner showed him.
When I was little, my grandparents owned the lot next their house and had a HUGE veggie garden.  I think the garden was behind the house too?  Anyway...they had fruit trees...I think pear, peach and apple!  We loved picking the fruit from the trees, picking/digging up veggies and looking for pecans.  It kept us busy for hours...literally.  I know my boys would be in heaven if we had a big garden of veggies to pick...I wonder how many would make it until they were ripe!
When we came home the boys helped me clean the fruit, we cut it up and froze some for smoothies, then made a peach pie...YUM!
when daddy goes out of town...
Chris doesn't go out of town very often but we are headed into day 4 and Mommy is beat! As soon as I put the kiddos to bed, the thunderstorms started.  With all of the tornadoes lately, my kids are conditioned to get in the hall and watch a movie.  I decided to just move them to my bed and set up the lanterns and to give them books.  We snuggled for a little bit then they both fell asleep after an hour or so...now I will have to move them or just sleep in the twin beds...we'll see!  Thankfully, a friend invited Tanner over after VBS today and Sam had MDO at SKF so I actually had a few hours to  myself since bedtime was extra late tonight!  We are 7:00/7:30 kind of people!  I had lots of errands I really needed to run but I decided to have some "me time".  I think my last "me time" was in 2005.  I ran to a few of my favorite antique shops, clothing stores, went to the bookstore(and sat in the grown-up section) and had lunch at Bogie's BY MYSELF!!!  I really wanted to get a pedicure but I BROKE my toe last night... yes I was getting up from prayers with the boys it got caught and we literally heard it snap...gross!  It's a lovely shade of purple and pink.
Being without Chris for several nights has reminded me how much he helps in the afternoons.  Chris has "school teacher" hours so I am spoiled by a husband who typically walks in the door by 3:45 or 4:00.  Now with that said, he is long gone by the time we are moving in the morning...so my mornings are crazy.  Being solo from 3:45-8:00 every night is exhausting after putting in a 10 hour shift with the kiddos!  But back to Chris...he walks in the door exhausted from works and never sits.  He jumps right in with whatever we are doing...love him!!!  Miss him!
6-14-03
       I am so thankful that God blessed me with a husband who loves me so very much!  Chris certainly strives to love me as much as Christ loved the church (Eph. 5:22).  He listens to my big plans, prays for me and calms me down when I freak out!  When he is not here I miss him terribly, he is my best friend...everything is better when he is here!
       I am so very thankful for you Chris.  I don't thank you enough but you help our family more than I give you credit for. Thank you for loving me through thick and thin...I can't wait to see what God has in store for our marriage over the next 8 years!
Teaching a Child to Read
Before I start this post...this is my disclaimer...though I may have been a teacher and considered highly qualified to teach a child to read there is no perfect method and sometimes I am not always sure what's next or how to teach it.  Since I believe there is no perfect method, I believe the best person to teach a child to read is the one or ones who know him/her best...the mommy and daddy! Each child will learn differently and at a very different pace.  I am also posting this for a friend who asked me to...I would love anyone to add what has worked for them or their teaching K tricks!
Read, Read, Read
     This is SUPER important...if we want our children to love to read and to want to read, reading must be more than just part of the bed-time routine. I used to read as Tanner ran laps around the house but one day he finally sat and listened.  We read cookbooks, maps, receipts(yep...it's true), food labels, comic books, magazines, street signs, etc. I tell parents to read so much when you're in the grocery that people are looking to see if your crazy...read your list out loud, read nutrients, read sale signs...you get it!
     A,B,C's...we read lots of books with the A,B,C's to expose T. to the alphabet.  (Side note...T. finally sang his A,B,C's, recognized his letters and learned most of the sounds all within a 2 month period...talk about his timing!  I thought he would be the only child to go to K unable to sing his ABC's!)
Reading Readiness
     Learn to look for the signs of reading readiness.
           Some Reading Readiness signs…these are from the blog 1plus1equals1.  *I new T. was ready when he started rhyming, could answer questions about stories we read and he started saying the letter a words started with.
•Your child pretends to read books
•Your child knows the sounds letters make {not just the names of the letters but the sounds they make {think: Leapfrog Letter Factory}
•Your child notices environmental print—signs, TV show names, street signs, store names, cereal boxes, etc.
•Your child knows where the words are on a page in a book
•Your child knows that we read from left to right and can imitate this action as you read.
•Your child can retell a story you read in his/her own words {showing the ability to comprehend and retell}
•Your child holds book the proper way {not upside down or sideways}
•Your child recognizes his/her own name and other familiar names or words {mom, dad, siblings, etc.}
•Your child shows an interest in writing and pretends to write {or is already writing letters}
•Your child understands rhyming words
•Your child understands beginning sounds {ask-what sound do you hear at the beginning of the word “cat”?}
•Your child is interested in learning to read!
During this phase of Reading Readiness we:
watched this...best video ever
read this
-I made a few games that  I would be happy to share if someone wanted them
and played lots of this
and this
We also talked about all the signs and words around us as we were in the car! He learned to recognize Chik-fil-a, Target and Hope first...wonder what we do all week!
Teaching Reading
     My reading program consists of  phonics, sight words and easy readers. Some people are avid fans of just the phonics approach or just whole language but we like a little of both!
     My very favorite beginning readers are the phonics-based readers by Nora Gaydos. Tanner prefers these to the Bob Books.  The Nora Gaydos books are really funny...I would have started with these if I had known about them sooner! These books are so great because they start with simple 3-letter words and simple sentences.  They also have comprehension and rhyming questions at the end of the Nora Gaydos books...added bonus! Tanner was always so excited when he read by himself even if it was just...Mat sat.
        ...we used the first BOB books Set 1, then Nora Gaydos Clever Critters:Now I Am Reading Level 1: Advanced and are just starting level 2...it's hard!
     Leveled readers come after beginner readers and are a little bit more difficult to find good ones. We love these...most words are CVC or sight words with some extras! Some say level 1 but are really difficult...just know you have to open each one and see if it's appropriate for your child's ability level!
We have been enjoying these lately.  I used the highlight tape to highlight his sight words.
Puppy Mudge Takes a Bath (Ready-to-Read. Pre-Level 1) Itchy, Itchy Chicken Pox (Hello Reader!, Level 1)  Biscuit's Big Friend (My First I Can Read Series) The Spooky Tire (Trucktown Ready-to-Roll Series: Level 1) Uh-Oh, Max (Trucktown Ready-to-Roll Series: Level 1)  Hop on Pop  Water
     I am also using the $5 sight word activities from 1plus1equals1...You Can Read.  Tanner loves all of the activities and we put his sight words into a word cube that we roll and play games with. The program came with Bingo, cutting, playdough boards, writting, etc. I originally started with the Dolche list but then found this resource and it really helped organize me.  I also recommend adding number and colors words.  We started sight words by making a book with pictures and family member names! We have a sight word wall in the playroom.  He just glues the new words on as we learn them.
     Phonics-"Associating a letter sound with a letter" .  Teach 1-2 letters at time and teach the sound they make. It is best to teach the letters out of ABC order.  Teach short vowels first "the middle mystery" sounds(I always wrote then in red). Associating an action with vowel sound like "i" says /i/ like "itchy"...have them pretend to itch.  Once your child has mastered the individual sounds you can start working on blending them together. Letter magnets are a great tool for teaching reading as well. Use them on the fridge or on cookie sheets. We played several games such as making letters with playdough, writing or hiding them in sand, hide and seek with the sounds, I Spy, scavenger hunts and more...all while practicing the sounds.  Tanner loves to make silly words!
****WARNING...once your child can spell and read your world changes! Tanner knows what words we are spelling and he has written some hilarious words just practicing writing CVC words..."S..E..X" was his lastest...no he doesn't know the meaning!!! AGH!
